Seasat, ERS-112 and NSCAT Scatterometer Observed Changes on the Large Ice Sheets

چکیده
Satellite-borne wind scatterometers are effective tools for monitoing ice sheets and microwave imaging techniques enable comparison of historic and contemporary scatterometer data in climate change studies. We document scattering characteristics of the Greenland ice sheet using data from the NSCAT, ERS-112 and Seasat SASS instruments. Cand Ku-band data enable characterization of frequencydependent scattering characteristics and regional melting delineation. SASS-NSCAT differences show 18 year changes in dry-snow zone extent and indicate the decadal reponse to changes in the spatial patterns of accumulation and ablation.

متن کاملMulti-spectral Analysis of the Amazon Basin using SeaWinds, ERS, Seasat Scatterometers, TRMM-PR amd SSM/I
The Amazon basin represents a vast geographical zone containing large proportion of global biomass. We use the SeaWinds scatterometer (QSCAT), ERS-1/-2 scatterometer (ESCAT), NASA scatterometer (NSCAT), Seasat scatterometer (SASS), Tropical Rain Measuring Mission Precipitation Radar (TRMMPR) and Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) data to study the multi-spectral microwave response of Amazo...
متن کاملCharacterizing ]Earth's Surface Using Moderate Resolution 14Ghz Scatterometer Imagery: Early Results from NSCAT Construction
I. INTRODUCTION Currently there is an extended effort to measure and model global climate. Small-scale vegetation maps, some derived from satellite imagery, are important components of these models. Because of the very large continental regions involved, Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) imagery and its derivative vegetation index products with resolutions between 1 and 12 km hav...
متن کاملCryosphere applications of NSCAT data
Though designed to measure vector winds over the ocean, new imaging techniques facilitate the use of NASA Scatterometer data (NSCAT) in cryosphere studies. NSCAT provides data of unprecedented coverage, resolution, and quality which, when coupled with the scatterometer image reconstruction with filtering (SIRF) algorithm, enables images of σ at resolutions approaching 8 km over stationary targe...
متن کاملGreenland snow accumulation estimates from satellite radar scatterometer data
Data collected by the C band ERS-2 wind scatterometer (EScat), the Ku band ADEOS-1 NASA scatterometer (NSCAT), and the Ku band SeaWinds on QuikScat (QSCAT) satellite instruments are used to illustrate spatiotemporal variability in snow accumulation on the Greenland ice sheet. Microwave radar backscatter images of Greenland are derived using the scatterometer image reconstruction (SIR) method at...
